Edith’s War
by Andrew Smith
Edith’s War is a novel that portrays the effect
of World War II on two generations: parents
Edith and Joe Maguire, who lived through
the war itself, and their sons, Will and
Shamus, who grew up in its aftermath.
Chapters alternate between a dialogue that takes place between Edith’s two sons in 2002 and an account of Edith’s experiences during WWII in Merseyside, England.
Unbeknownst to her children, Edith was good friends with a Venetian family during the war in England. She witnessed the brutality of war from both sides: the indiscriminate internment of innocent British Italians as ordered by Churchill, and the death and destruction resulting from the German bombing of Liverpool.
The brothers’ conversation takes place during a day spent in Venice, a trip orchestrated by Edith, now eighty-three. She is to join them the next day to fulfil a lifelong wish to visit ‘La Serenissima.’ A year has passed since the Al-Qaeda terrorist events of September 11 and America is threatening to invade Iraq. The brothers’ thoughts return again and again to conflict, in their own lives and in the world at large. Their conversations also shed light on the nature of Edith’s life since the war years.
The novel is an evocation of the omnipresence of war throughout history. The book is also an examination of prejudice as a result of war, something that has distinct relevance in today’s world.

Andrew Smith’s writing has been included in the Journey Prize Anthology, has been shortlisted for the CBC Literary Awards, and has garnered a Western Magazine Award for Travel Writing. He has published two non-fiction books: Highlights, an illustrated history of cannabis (co-author) and Strangers in the Garden, the secret lives of our favorite flowers.
